WDBKA completes another successful Beginner's Course

WDBKA hosted its popular annual one day course 'Beekeeping for Absolute Beginners' for potential new beekeepers in March 2019. Throughout the day attendees listened to experienced members talk about honey bees, apiaries, equipment, inspections, diseases and many other topics. We signed up lots of new members and look forward to welcoming them to our apiary visits.

Feedback from our attendees:

'We both found the course extremely beneficial. We learnt a lot and found all the presenters very knowledgeable and approachable.'

'Many thanks for laying on such a fantastic day. I’m really looking forward to taking the plunge into beekeeping and can’t wait for the apiary visit.'

'All the subjects were completely new to me so I particularly appreciated the ‘warts and all’ approach by the instructors. It must be difficult to convey the pleasure of beekeeping to drum up support while highlighting the downsides and putting people off.'

'I did very much enjoy the course on Saturday.Overall it was just what I needed to help me make a decision whether bee keeping is for me.'

Details of our next course in 2021.

Wintershill Countryside Day for schools for children with additional needs - June 2019

Several WDBKA members, ably organised by our Education Secretary, took part in the the Wintershill Countryside day at Wintershill Farm talking to children about bees and beekeeping.

The children looked at a virtual hive, spotted the queen in the observation hive, tried on bee suits and they all went home with a candle they had made themselves. The children were interested and already well informed judging by the questions they were asking us. We aim to give the children a chance to feel, hear, see, smell but not taste during their time with us, trying to find the best way to communicate with individuals as their needs are so variable. We do our best to make it a memorable day for the children; it certainly is for us.
